Start now - a zero waste mindset

Updated: Jan 26, 2018

Feeling overwhelmed about where to start? The first thing you need to do is start with your mindset.

One thing we don't talk a lot about in the zero waste community is mindset. Many of us believe it starts with the practical changes - buying glass jars, sewing cloth napkins, using reusable coffee cups. And yes, all these switches need to be made... eventually, but before we start with the practical changes, we need to change our mindset.

You're embarking on a zero waste life. Do you think it's too hard? Do you think plastic pollution is too big to tackle? Do you think climate change is an unsolvable problem? Or are you just tired of all the negativity? I felt all those things before I began my zero waste journey. I always put "save the planet" in the too hard basket. Surely, someone else who is more qualified that little ol' me will look after the problem? Someone else will advocate for the planet, someone with more time, more money, more knowledge. But what if everyone thought that? There will be no one to speak up for the environment. We are all assuming it'll be someone else.

Before starting on your zero waste journey, just be curious and open minded. That's all. You don't need cloth bags and stainless steel straws yet, just aim to open up your hearts and minds to the possibility of change. Use the motto - "it's better done than perfect". No one is asking you go from wasteful to zero waste in one day. It's all about the effort.

Once you get started, the momentum will pick up and before you know it, you would have reduced 80% of your waste. Imagine if 7 billion people reduced their waste by 80%? Or even 50%? Or even 20%? That's the power of the zero waste movement, it's about the small consistent changes that make a massive cumulative impact.

The time to get started is today and the first thing you can do is to change your mindset.
